DELTA

I’m not quite sure, but I think I had an out-of-body experience.

I mean, the way Reed touched me. The way he set my soul on fire. The way he held me so close after like I’m the most precious thing in the world. It was all so much.

I’ve never been one for writing flowery prose. As an investigative journalist, the phrase “brevity is beautiful” has been drilled into my head over and over by every professor and editor I’ve ever had.

But at this moment, I wish I peddled prose or poetry instead of facts and figures. I could fill a whole volume.

Still leaning back against the muscular wall of Reed’s chest, I fill my lungs and release a long breath.

His low, deep chuckle rumbles in my chest. “Good. You’re still breathing.”

“I wasn’t so sure I would ever again for a couple of minutes there.”

“And you’re speaking in complete sentences, too.” He squeezes me in a hug from behind. “I never thought I’d live to see the day that Delta was at a loss for words.”

“Don’t go telling anyone that.” I cover his hands with mine and burrow deeper against him. “I’ll never work again if you do.”

“You’d find a way.” He kisses the soft skin behind my ear, and a fresh shiver of desire runs up and down my spine. “You’ve always been good at finding a way to survive and thrive.”

“Did you really just say survive and thrive?”

“Maybe.” He squeezes me.

“How very self-improvement of you.”

He snorts. “I probably saw it on a coffee mug somewhere.”

“Yeah, yeah. I bet if I looked at your bookshelves I’d find them jam-packed with titles like Feel Your Way Forward and How to Be A Strong, Sensitive Man.”

“Do those books really exist?”

“You tell me. You’re the one who reads them.”

He shakes his head. “I guess there’s only one way to settle this.”

“How’s that?”

“You’ll have to come over to my place tonight.”

I freeze, but my heart pounds in my ears. “You want me to come over?”

“You can snoop through my bookshelves while I make us dinner.”

Is Reed asking me out on a date? I don’t know why that should surprise me. He did just give me an orgasm that blew my mind to outer space. Still, part of me wondered if this was a one-time deal. Sort of like an “I’m glad we didn’t die in the ocean” celebration.

A date means more. At the very least, it means he wants to see me again. At the most . . .

Before I let my imagination run away with me, I should probably give him an answer. “I need to check with Tate, but I can probably make dinner work.”

“Good.” He gives me another kiss before loosening his hold on me. “We should head back up.”

“Are you worried they’ll be wondering what we’ve been up to down here?”

“I don’t give a shit about what people think we’ve been up to down here.” He gives my behind a fond pat and helps me to stand. “But Tate says we’re about to reach land.
